how much awesomer is DDR2 1066 than DDR2 800?

Is it worth risking my new mobo not working because it requires an AM2+ proc to bump it up to 1066? Are there any mobos under 100 bucks that would support 1066 ddr2 without needing an AM2+ cpu? Or can I just run the 1066 ram as 800? Will it boot? Then i can OC it? (or would that be pointless without an am2+ cpu sitting on the other side?)

(i'm stuck with the cpu, which is only AM2 not AM2+. I have 1066 ram (latency 5) , but can send it back for refund. the mobo is not purchased yet.)

so if i get new ddr2 ram, what about the difference between a cas latency of 4 vs 6? Is the 4 worth the 10 dollar premium over the 6?

*salute

1066 will run as 800 and *should* boot.

I've got 6.5 cas latency, and its not my bottleneck... is EVERYTHING else in your box gonna be the fastest possible? If not, then I would not worry about the extra 10$.

i'll try to remember to ask him, then poast the board that porkfrigat bought, as I think it supports both am2+ and am2 (and therefor *should* support 1066).

yea i'm looking at this board, which says explicitly like others, that it "only supports 1066 if you have an AM2+ cpu or better."

but everywhere i read says the ram will degrade nicely to 800, and that makes sense . . . ram has always been backwards compatible as long as you are in the same group, ddr1,2, etc.

so i'm buying this board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130173

because of the mail in rebate its the same price as the cheapest board i could buy and still get pcie x16 v2.0

that's nice, i wasn't really considering asrock because i hadn't heard of them. But they're good I take it.

However, I can drive to frys TODAY and have this working TONIGHT if I go withthis board instead of the one i mentioned above. (vs Saturday arrival at best.)

the only diff is this newer board is crossfire capable and uses the newest chipset instead of one 2 versions back. Is that worth 17 bucks? (shipping costs vs pickup has already been factored in.)

ROFL assrocks

I would make sure you know someone who owns a stick of what says is compatible in case you need to change bios settings in order to run it. Like I said before I did a similar thing and couldn't boot the ram due to motherboard default voltage setting.

Yea, your story is what sent me on a googling binge. Worst case is I can buy and return a stick from frys.

ok thanks for the help guys. I was about to go buy the nice fancy crossfire board, but then i read one last review which linked to MSI talking about how they removed support for 125W cpus for that board. :(

And then i researched the chipsets, and the ONLY difference is that 1 is crossfire, the other is not.

so imma go with the cheaper board and then buy some beer with the change.
