this is still alpha but should be out soon. anyone in the alpha?

It's 4 players versus 1 a big player-controlled monster.

I'm really interested but will of course wait for reviews.

what about the DLC do they hate? I haven't understood this.

Bundling all your un-released DLC is common (Evolve PC Monster Race Edition). Borderlands, Battlefield, COD.

Pre-orders including the 1st DLC is common. Battlefield 3 and 4 did that. I assume COD does the same. What is a better way to sweeten the pre-order?

Selling new weapon sets and skins is also common (Hunting Season Pass). CSGO, DOTA.

That said, the purchase options on Steam are confusing. They did cock that up. The "Hunting Season Pass" isn't a "Season Pass" like in bf4 and cod and borderlands. Is that why they're all mad?

I think everyone would prefer the preorder "bonus" to be a price discount, with only one version of the game, and all content available regardless of whether you preorder, purchase at release, or buy later. But that doesn't make publishers as much money.

Bingo. In addition, some of the pre-order bonuses are things like, "A creature-to-be-created-later" so you really have no idea what you're getting.

The other complains that I've seen is that the asymmetrical gameplay balance is really hard to get right. Since it is always 1v4 you have to make the 1 creature as strong as the 4 hunters and there is a big expectation that the hunters will be coordinating and working together (which is hard if you're dealing with randos). So a moderately creature can easily wipe the floor vs. 4 random hunters that aren't working together. Hunters can't 1v1 the creature so if you're on a team with 1-3 retards then you're probably screwed.

lol, nobody is pricing their games like that anymore. Don't blame 2K for not using a 2001 pricing scheme on a major release. BF Hardline is full price. GTA5 is full price.

Here we are enjoying CSGO (and not L4D2) because there's money still coming in beyond the initial purchase and encouraging development. I'm all for that when it doesn't split the community. So skins, characters, hats, who cares. As long as it's not maps (Battlefield) or overpowered weapons (Tribes Ascend).

Yes, balance is going to be important. In the beta, hunters won 51% of the time. So they're doing a great job in that department already.

Yes, when you have idiots on your team it will hurt your chances at winning. Fortunately, if the monster is way better than your team it only takes 5 minutes to end it, compared to CSGO where it drags on for 45 to an hour.

All these DLC/Pre-order complaints don't affect the core game. If you don't like it, just don't pre-order. Just don't buy the extra characters. You still get all the modes, all the maps, and are just as effective as someone w/ the extra shit. Is that what we've been wanting in a game forever? Isn't that what TF2 and CSGO do right?

Character DLC will most likely affect balance. You don't get to play as the character if you haven't bought it, but you can end up playing against it.

Also, the fact that other games pull DLC bullshit does not excuse the existence of said bullshit. I'd rather patronize games that don't do that, even if it means I end up buying a GOTY version for $5 years later.

Well you gotta fund continued development in some way. What would you suggest instead? A sequel every year or two? That completely divides the community.

Character DLC is designed to not affect balance, and they have a good track record so far. The Wraith was shown to be OP in the beta, so they're nerfing it to have the same win-rate as the other monsters.

New hunters are just a new skin and 3 different weapons. TF2 has shown you can do this with hundreds of different weapons and maintain balance.

Cosmetic stuff seems to work just fine for many current games. We could also go back to the days of having good mod tools and encouraging the development of communities around the game so that there's a steady stream of sales to continue funding new content (which is not in and of itself desirable), but I'm not holding my breath.

I also disagree that TF2 succeeded as a competitive/balanced title with all the weapons, but I never had a high opinion of the game to begin with.

thanks for the link. i bought the full pack.

played a bunch today and loving it.

back to the balance issue, while there are 18 hunters (eventually), it's divided between 4 classes. It's not hard to balance 4-5 characters within a given class. Same for monsters: not hard to balance 5 monsters while providing unique play-styles to each. They've explicitly stated they want a balanced game. So it's just a question of whether or not you trust Turtle Rock to keep shit balanced.

srsly not that hard. the classes depend on each other, so you're just balancing within a class. that's 4-5 characters that need to be balanced. plus they'll be getting paid so they'll have man-hours to throw at it. again they already said they will do this, and have delivered on balance in the past (l4d, evolve beta). this is clearly not a case of pay-to-win.

anyway, here's a great list of evolve new player tips from reddit, in general and for each class. TIL some things.

oh and here's canon backstory on the evolve characters. it's good.

evolve tutorials playlist - bunch of official vids from turtle rock all in one place. 30 minutes watching this will save hours of not knowing what the fuck is going on.

anti-kraken tips
Quote:
SeldomSerenity:

Wall of text incoming, but I generally have no issues playing against a Kraken.

Playing against Kraken is completely different vs Goliath or Wraith. The hunters have to choose their battles a bit more carefully against a Kraken. The Kraken is arguably the easiest to track and find, but hardest to catch due to its flight. Because of this, you have to track it and cut it off in preferable terrain that limits the Kraken's ability to fly and maneuver in air. Try to trap it in an areas such as caves or buildings, or with tall impassable cliffs to limit its mobility.

Stay spread out, which is true for all monsters, but Kraken has the widest and most abundant AoE and is mostly ranged so it can pick its targets easier then the other two.

The trapper is very important against the Kraken to limit mobility. Harpoons, Val's tranq, etc can actually make the monster lose altitude.

Try to watch each others backs for banshee mines (the little blue/red heat-seeking balls of explosive doom), these can be shot by you or team mates so that they explode and do no damage. If you don't have any line of sight on the monster to do any damage. Do your team mates a favor and look around for banshee mines to shoot. Basically don't have tunnel vision and focus on just the monster. (Unlike other monsters who don't spawn something else to focus on). As a Kraken player, banshee mines are always underestimated and many people either ignore them or figure someone else with shoot them down.

Time you're strafe boosts properly with the lightning bolt. Don't strafe as soon as you see the bolt charging. It's a good way to run out of juice quick.

One other BIG mistake people make against Kraken is that since its flying around and not charging at them like Wraith or Goliath is that they stop moving. NO. Keep moving, never stop. This makes it harder for the Kraken to hit you with its various aimed abilities, and also makes the slow moving banshee mines that you might not see behind you less likely to actually hit you.

Edit: Forgot to add that the Kraken can NOT look directly down while it is flying. If you stand right underneath it, it can't hurt you at all.
