I'm not sure I understand all the outrage, is there something I'm missing here? Does the guy who wants to build Whatever You Want to Call It preach extremism or celebrate 9/11 as a victory of some kind? If not, who fucking gives a shit? Regular Muslims didn't have anything to do with 9/11, extremist whackjobs did.

It's got a lot of negative factors. First is public perception; most Americans view the Muslim religion (wrongly I believe, and as you pointed out) for the extremist attitudes that caused 9/11. The main Imam for this new one does have some links to extremist attitudes (I think 2 of the 9/11 hijackers went to his mosque for a few years, he's been known for anti-western sermons, and he publicly states that Hamas is not a terrorist organization). Lastly many Muslim extremists (namely Hamas, though some others) have publicly supported the building of this mosque as a victory monument (not necessarly the builders intent, but they're trying to hijack it as a PR victory).

Theres no legal basis for rejection, but most of America is saying it's just a matter of "why here, and not someplace else a few blocks further away where there won't be all the drama about it?"

Personally: I understand and believe that most Muslims are very peaceful people, however you don't see Christans out trying to build new churches on top of battle/memorial sites as a matter of respect (it's not necessary, so why ruffle peoples feathers?). It's already been beat to death that there are a lot of hard feelings about this, so why keep pushing to build here unless there is an alterior motive?
