So I acquired a tv show Dvd Rip which when i open plays fine but the audio sounds like a bunch of squirrels. Anyone have any ideas?

My personal favorite is the Gordian Knot codec pack: http://www.free-codecs.com/Gordian_Knot ... wnload.htm

But it doesn't have DivX 5; you should get an "unofficial trial version" of that.

If you use VLC media player to play the rip, you might not have to download any extra codecs.. it comes with a shitload.

My suggestion is to, quickly, uninstall everything on your machine related to sound. You're good at that.

I still stipulate that your piece of shit pc sound wasnt working right before hand and that one program should not have affected it

If you have FFDShow installed, make sure the output isn't set to AC3. That's what seems to cause most weird sound issues for me.
