Sadly so very, very true. Can't tell you the number of XP installs I avoided my completely legit copies in favor of the hacked stuff I had simply because it avoided all of MS's bullshit. Make a good product and people will buy it. Fuck it up, and people will make it better then offer it for free.

Steam doesn't limit the number of times you can install a game, or put rootkits on your computer (WoW, PunkBuster), or neuter its games - a vain effort that will make life a tiny bit more difficult for cracking crews and no less difficult at all for pirates of the game, but much more difficult for people who actually pay fucking money for it.

Eh, I have no problems with steam. Shitty as fuck when it first came out, but it works well now with only rare fuck-ups that are quickly fixed. I have no problem paying for the games/software I use. What I object to is paying for them, then having to deal with horribly invasive or fuckup-ridden anti-piracy measures that take me 16 hours and 3 phone calls with 5 hours of 'wait' time a piece to finally work through just so that I can use the 'license to make use of the software' that I purchased. Fucking make it simple fuckheads.

if you consider steam for a single purchase for a single game, it's rather draconian. You have to DL an extra program, keep it installed, and sign in to play the game.

And what's scary about having it for multiple games is if Valve goes down . . . well, there's always offline mode and backup so I guess even if Valve dies you can still play your games.

huh. that's not so bad actually. except for the 'if your account gets hacked you can never play multiplayer again for that game unless you start a new account' thing.

That's true for VAC bans, but at least if your account gets hijacked and someone DOESN'T cheat on it, you can get it back by supplying the payment info you used. That's a pretty neat feature that a non-Steam platform can't provide.

new patch yay!
  • Patch Version 3.0.4

    * Improved console help
    * Added Clan support. Add clan tag in Account Settings. You must change information while in single player mode for now.
    * Admin VOIP Improvements
    * New "version" console command to see the current version
    * Server browser performance improvements
    * Fixes joining password protected servers so it no longer selects the server underneath the mouse cursor when clicking on the "Join" button in the password entry dialog.
    * Fix for settings menu improperly closing when ESC pressed and leaving the player stuck with no UI and limited control
    * Mission generation optimizations
    * Fixed issue with logging into game servers that sometimes used another player's soldier profile.
    * New TS3 SDK integrated
    * Improves how server manages authentication objects
    * Fixes issue with players being added to the scoring system not having all of their scoring data written.
    * Fixes issue where players not logged into MBS were being logged out if they left the server prior to authenticating
    * M320 grenade attaching issue resolved.
    * Dedicated server title bar now shows mission and player details
    * Fixes the "Waiting for other players" UI so it now appears again.
    * Removes some server logging
    * Increased communications handling to support when all players use heavy load outs. This may correct many instances where players didn't spawn correctly or get the correct load out.
    * Fixes the M320 getting an extra round of ammo
    * Fixes the Account Settings password changing not working properly
    * Fixes the IRC link not working
    * Fixes the displayed mission type (assault/defense/etc.) shown in the battle planner so it displays properly after side-swapping
if the "admin VOIP improvements" means "the server setting of 'team talk only' sticks around even after map change" then that is probably the most critical fix they could have released. However, the server browser and the loadout fix are nice too. it should feel like an actual release candidate now.

oh, also, the servers with the shield on their row in the browser are punkbuster protected servers. if you join one of these but it won't let you join a team then you need to update your punkbuster manually.

i'm curious as to why they went to all the trouble to write a story about it but then talked about 'kredits' instead of 'isk.' don't tell me they're called something different in the british version of the game because that's a fucking lie.

we do it for the isks.

i'll be giving this game exactly 1 chance. Unfair? Sure. But its the same amount of chances I gave BF2 to get me hooked.

Is it ready enough for me to download and give it that one chance?

okay, i finally redownloaded this pile of crap.

you'd think with the DoD's budget they could afford not to release a memory-leaking pile of santorum-laden douche leakage.

that said, i'll give it another go.

Since it sounds like several of you are going to give it a shot, but going in with a typical agent-style attitude and being that I have absolutely nothing better to do I'll give u a quick guide to not frustraiting the hell out of yourselves:

1) Do the training. Expect to spend 1-2 hours on it. It'll save you a tremendous amount of frustration later trying to figure out what button does what, how to switch weapons and ammo types, etc. Particular things to pay attention to are the medical training (you'll need it to heal others in multi) and how to aim with the grenades (they're tough to get the hang of).

2) Practice the standard marksmenship stuff a bit (bring up weapon sights, control breathing, aim at target, pull trigger). Realize that they have modeled bullet trajectory in this game. Without going into a long explanation know that at 1-100 meters aim at the stomach of the target, at 100-200 aim at the middle of the torso, and at 200-300 meters, aim at the upper chest. Also your bullets don't hit immediately. It'll take a good 3/4th's to 1 second for a long range shot to hit. Unfortunately it seems that point blank shots take a little while to hit too (something everyone complains about and I pray they're working on fixing)

3) What I've found works: If you want to play defense for a few seconds make sure you're at a medium to long range from where you expect your enemy to appear (30ft or farther away), crouch or prone out (the lower and more supported the better your aim), and wait patiently. If you're closer then that you're better off on the offense. Switch u'r weapon to auto-fire or 3-round burst and charge in...it's annoying, but at close range the person not moving (defending) usually dies.

4) Keep track of how many rounds you've fired from each clip. Like in real life there is no ammo counter and running out mid-battle is very, very bad. Reloading takes several seconds and usually results in death. After every time you've reloaded (including when first loading at the beginning of a round) fire off a single round into the ground or air to make sure that your weapon loaded properly (unfortunately this is a game bug where sometimes it does the animation but doesnt actually reload you, and yes, I am aware that the game actually does cause your gun to jam on occasion too. Before any bitches about this though, I have to admit that I've learned in real life to always check the rifle chamber for a misfeed/jam after every load...takes only a second, but is a common time for a rifle to jam and I died once in training due to not checking....)

5) When you first get started avoid any leadership positions (squad /fireteam leader). Get yourself under someone else, locate them at the start (watch u'r minimap for u'r fireteam letter) and follow them. Stay on their ass and learn the game/maps from someone who's been doing it.

6) When doing weapon selection: I've not looked at any of the numbers/programing but from personal experience I've found the M16 to be a bit more accurate then the M4 (though the M4 has full auto mode compared to the 16's 3-round burst). M68 Red-dot scopes are always good things (gives a better field of view/situational awareness). I can't hit shit with the grenade launcher (do great in training, but multi- I can't do anything), and the M249 SAW is a good suppression weapon. Use it for suppression if you have others to work with so that they can manuver while u keep the enemies' heads down or pointing the wrong way.

7) Lastly it's still a rough game. It's not a polished CS:S or even a good old rogue spear, but it does hold a lot of fun factor given the teamwork atmosphere it fosters. Basically don't expect something that doesnt need a little work yet...

well said, teaks!

In short: be prepared to try. if you don't want to try, then don't bother. And remember how buggy the CSS beta was? This is worse.

However, if you miss the tactical shooter days of CS 1.5 where you had to be quiet, sneaky, quick, and accurate to survive, (and most servers were capped at 18 players), then this will fill that hole well (or even better). At least it will in another 6 months when they actually get to release quality. heh.
