As many of you may already know, the AI Director is, among other things, in charge of music and musical cues. These set the tone for impending hordes and special Infected, or at least they're supposed to. Instead, as the theme music kicks in, you can use this chance to orient yourself and to prepare for the oncoming attack. Here are some of the more useful sound cues. (NOTE: I have not completely confirmed these in-game, but these are the sounds as listed by the script file.)
1. Boomer
Upon spawning a Boomer, the game alerts players by playing a low, five-note sequence on piano. If the Boomer is spawned far away, the notes are played on strings. It sounds like "dung dung DUNG DUNG dunnnnnngggggggg) The first four notes ascend, and the last one descends and is held. Boomers also make "glurping" sounds when they're around. Listen for them.

2. Hunter
When a Hunter is around, the game will play three pairs of notes: the first note is a grace note and difficult to hear, making it sound like three notes instead of six. They are sounded in high, low, medium order. All three are on the high end of the keyboard, though, unlike the low notes of the Boomer alert. If the Hunter is spawned further away, these are played on strings, like in the theme from Psycho. Hunters make a combination of low growls and loud shrieks that are difficult to miss.

3. Smoker
The Smoker's audio cue is simply two low chords on piano, or on strings. Don't mistake it for the
Boomer. The Smoker can be identified by his wheezing coughs and gasps. He makes high growls when he's not coughing. Smokers also make a loud wheezing moan/cough when they spawn.

4. Tank
The Tank has his own theme music. If you've fought one, you'll know it right away. When a Tank is spawned, the music kicks in. It begins with drums and brass instruments, followed by strings and later vocals. But by that time you've probably already seen the Tank. I leave strategy up to you in this case. When he hasn't seen you, the Tank makes a series of throaty breathing sounds.

5. Witch
I really don't need to explain this. Witch makes sobbing sounds while creepy music plays.

6. Hordes
According to the music script file, hordes can come from three directions. There are music cues in the demo for the first two, ahead, and behind. There aren't any for the third, above. Small hordes are signalled by high wind instruments. They sound pretty small. Medium hordes are signalled by a trumpet. Large hordes are signalled by a lower brass instrument, maybe a horn or something, I don't know. There's also a fourth category marked X. I've taken this to mean Xtra-large. It's made up of several brass instruments together. Watch out!
Hordes can come from two directions at present, though the script file tells of a third. If a horde comes from in front, the musical cue is the Left 4 Dead motif: three notes, one low, long note, one high, short, note, then a third, medium, long note. You hear it all the time, including at safehouses. If the horde comes from behind, however, the three notes are reversed. Medium, high, low. It sounds weirder than the first one, and a bit unsettling.

And, of course, when you've alerted the horde, you get the sound of...well... a horde. Screaming. Coming at you.
