Quote: Thats why they call me Civil Smith, Agent_Blackpot. Not to defend MS, but Apple has spent the last 10+ years proving walled gardens are A) profitable and B) accepted and even embraced by the masses. MSFT has never been an innovator, they've been a follower. Why would they change their DNA now? I already acknowledged that this isn't an issue for the masses. Quote: Normal people? Probably don't care.
We were discussing a lack of side-loading for metro apps. Let's not get into opinion driven discussions about the most innovative product lines. Not that it wouldn't be interesting, but it'd involve a lot of typing and I'd rather discuss it in mumble.p.s. Google has spent the last 4 years proving that an open ecosystem is A) profitable and B) accepted and even embraced by the masses. Walled gardens are not necessary for success. |

The new start screen is actually better than the start menu. However, Win8 "apps" running on the desktop are garbage. |

If I buy a laptop with it preinstalled can it be downgraded back to 7? |

^^^^ This. Let it be written, Happy and I are in total agreement. However, Win8 "apps" running [on a desktop PC] are garbage. Ultros, you could reformat and install from your own win7 disc and CD-key. don't have it? It's still for sale: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mss ... .235488300 |

Well, I did hear that they were fucking around with the Bios, making it not a Bios anymore but something stupid. That was way prior to launch though, haven't heard more about it. I installed Win 8 on my existing PC and I still have a bios. But maybe new laptops don't? |

If you have Win 8 + UEFI, you'll need to disable secure boot before trying to install a new OS. |

Additionally, I bought a win8 laptop, removed the Win8 pre-load hard drive prior to booting, and tried to boot in 3 other non UEFI PCs. Did not work. Unsure if this was because they were non UEFI, or because Win8 needed to see the laptop that it was preloaded for. |
