Not to defend MS, but Apple has spent the last 10+ years proving walled gardens are A) profitable and B) accepted and even embraced by the masses. MSFT has never been an innovator, they've been a follower. Why would they change their DNA now?
Smith,

I already acknowledged that this isn't an issue for the masses.

Normal people? Probably don't care.
We were discussing a lack of side-loading for metro apps. Let's not get into opinion driven discussions about the most innovative product lines. Not that it wouldn't be interesting, but it'd involve a lot of typing and I'd rather discuss it in mumble.

p.s.
Google has spent the last 4 years proving that an open ecosystem is A) profitable and B) accepted and even embraced by the masses. Walled gardens are not necessary for success.

Woz said it so it is gospel?

Agent: discussions usually involve opinions, and sometimes facts. This one includes both.

Your overwhelming facts and research have shown to me plainly that you are correct and i was wrong. Appreciate the effort you put into it just to make me smarter.

Saw it wont be upgrading unless its a tablet which I wont be buying either. No start menu as stand alone? Junk.

The new start screen is actually better than the start menu.

However, Win8 "apps" running on the desktop are garbage.

If I buy a laptop with it preinstalled can it be downgraded back to 7?

^^^^ This. Let it be written, Happy and I are in total agreement.

Ultros, you could reformat and install from your own win7 disc and CD-key.

don't have it? It's still for sale: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mss ... .235488300

Well, I did hear that they were fucking around with the Bios, making it not a Bios anymore but something stupid.

That was way prior to launch though, haven't heard more about it. I installed Win 8 on my existing PC and I still have a bios. But maybe new laptops don't?

I think you're thinking of two related things. UEFI is the "new bios", but it's not required to run Win 8. Some machines will have it, others won't. If you buy or build a new desktop, you'll likely be using UEFI. Laptops are more hit-or-miss.

The other thing you're thinking of is UEFI secure boot. If you have Win 8 + UEFI, you'll need to disable secure boot before trying to install a new OS.

and there is an option for the manufacturer to disable disabling secure boot, hence people panicked. So far I've not heard or seen anyone doing this, but I've only really dealt with HP products.

Additionally, I bought a win8 laptop, removed the Win8 pre-load hard drive prior to booting, and tried to boot in 3 other non UEFI PCs. Did not work. Unsure if this was because they were non UEFI, or because Win8 needed to see the laptop that it was preloaded for.

The boot drive likely used GPT and so won't boot on non-EFI systems. Even if it did, it'd probably crash during boot unless the hardware was very similar (Win7 would do the same).

I've been really surprised at the different hardware configs win7 will boot on. I tried a drive built in my HP generic tower full of OEM HP jaunk (core2quad), and it booted in my home-built Phenom2 system, as well as a Dell P4 laptop...
