Not to defend MS, but Apple has spent the last 10+ years proving walled gardens are A) profitable and B) accepted and even embraced by the masses. MSFT has never been an innovator, they've been a follower. Why would they change their DNA now?

Well, I did hear that they were fucking around with the Bios, making it not a Bios anymore but something stupid.

That was way prior to launch though, haven't heard more about it. I installed Win 8 on my existing PC and I still have a bios. But maybe new laptops don't?

I think you're thinking of two related things. UEFI is the "new bios", but it's not required to run Win 8. Some machines will have it, others won't. If you buy or build a new desktop, you'll likely be using UEFI. Laptops are more hit-or-miss.

The other thing you're thinking of is UEFI secure boot. If you have Win 8 + UEFI, you'll need to disable secure boot before trying to install a new OS.

and there is an option for the manufacturer to disable disabling secure boot, hence people panicked. So far I've not heard or seen anyone doing this, but I've only really dealt with HP products.

Additionally, I bought a win8 laptop, removed the Win8 pre-load hard drive prior to booting, and tried to boot in 3 other non UEFI PCs. Did not work. Unsure if this was because they were non UEFI, or because Win8 needed to see the laptop that it was preloaded for.

The boot drive likely used GPT and so won't boot on non-EFI systems. Even if it did, it'd probably crash during boot unless the hardware was very similar (Win7 would do the same).
