The only playoff setup I can think of that would be even remotely fair is this:

6 games featuring the winner of each conference (and the best non conference team for the independants)

Played in a neutral field that can hold a decent amount of people that is centrally located between both conferences)

1. Big Ten vs MAC
2. Pac 10 vs WAC
3. Sun Belt vs SEC
4. ACC vs, Independant
5. Big 12 vs Mountain West
6. Big East vs WAC - (Only ones that are all spread too far apart to make a nice match)

From there, we still try to stay centralized
1 vs 5
2 vs 6
3 vs 4

Rankings are made solely on the winners of those three games based solely on playoff performances. Based on Margin of victory, slopiness of play (i.e. margin isn't as bad if it was because of field conditions, etc. or out of the ordinary turnovers) Best team gets a bye and straight to the national championship game. The other 2 duke it out for the 2nd spot.

Winner is crowned National Championship for that year.

The first 6 games are played immediatly after Christmas.
The next 3 games immediatly after New Years
The last game played a week later.

So basically you have to win your conference, and you have to win out, and attempt to win impressively.

How come there can't be more than one team from a conference competing in the playoff? There could be more games in the playoffs if everyone took one or two of those silly gimme games against Northwest Southeast Louisiana Tech State out of their schedule.

Because then people would complain like they would now if Georgia played for the National Championship. I'm not saying get rid of all the other bowl games. Keep them for people who are eligible but aren't in contention for a national title. And well you'll never convince everyone to take out their in school competition.

So what you're saying is that the way the NCAA does the final four is bad?

If you're talking to me, setting it up like the basketball tournament would be bad due to the amount of time it would take to finish it. Keep in mind that it takes a week to plan/recuperate from a football game.

If we tried to make it 16 teams then it's back to bitching about who deserves the extra 4 slots. If we cut it to 8 teams, then certain conferences would bitch about being left out (regardless of whether or not opinion thinks they deserve to or not.) Having the conference champions in the games only eliminates the need for complaining about that as they had every shot they could to win their own conference.

Season begins last weekend in August.

11 regular season games.

All "major" conferences must have a championship game, played on the week before Thanksgiving.

Selection committee chooses 10 more at-large teams.

First two rounds of playoffs on Thanksgiving weekend and weekend after.

Losers of first- and second-round games plus all teams left out of playoffs enter bowl pool.

Gay - er, "quaint" bowl games for whiny crybaby purists played at normal times.

After bowls, play first round of Final Four.

A week later, play National Fucking Title Game.

Neutral sites for Final Four only -- want it to be more fair? Don't suck as much and get home field.

lol words, problem solved. No one can possibly have any problem with this system.

P.S. I meant this to be directed at John Saunders etc., not you Coq.

My solution isn't ironclad, but I think it's pretty sweet.

You'll still have people whining that they deserved to be one of those at large teams.

I know, but it would be like when the 19-12, 8th place ACC team whines about not getting into the BB tourney. How sorry do you feel for those teams? Then they always lose at home in the first round of the NIT.

Seeing as how you only have to be in the top 50% of Division 1A there really is no reason to complain in basketball.

I'm still not seeing how a system where the top teams actually play each other is no better than a system where the top teams are hypothetically pitted against one another in a duel of hopelessly complex criteria mixed with human opinion, which is often biased or just stupid.

Yes, people will always piss and moan. I don't know what makes that a good indicator of the quality of a system, but you know with a playoff there will be a lot fewer pissers and moaners. Besides, I'm sure they'd all agree that even if their two-loss team just barely misses the playoffs, the system as a whole is still better than a BCS that would have landed their team in a hilariously lopsided Lemonparty.org Who Gives A Shit Bowl.

A two-loss team - one of the losses by the score of 48-7 - narrowly missed out on the BCS Title Game.

I don't even need to add anything.

Seeing as it's last victory was a well handed one against the #1 team in the country, they do get credit for that even though they had a huge loss very early in the season.

Dear Henne/Hart,

Congrats on actually winning a meaningful game. Don't worry, though -- you still suck. Good luck on whatever practice squad you end up on.

P.S. Lloyd Carr, you also still suck. Give us back our National Title.
