http://store.steampowered.com/news/2566/ (america's army)

I'm preloading, because it's free.

I wonder if Arma 2 will be any good. Has anyone played its prequel(s)?

I played America's Army as they transitioned from 1 to 2. I appreciate the realism and it was actually a fairly well done game, but most servers ran a 10 minute time limit meaning everyone hid for the first 9 minutes hopeing to pick off newbies who moved, then had a frantic firefight (maybe) while trying to run for objectives for the last minute. I'll preload too and give it a shot though...

As for the Arma games...I played the first one for all of about 10 minutes. That was more then enough time for me to realize that it was far surpassed by every other war game out there (was about the same time as BF2 came out). The only thing ARMA had was huge open maps. Hit detection, networking code, general grass/cover/concealment was just shitty, vehicles were too few and far between, etc. etc. etc. I hold no hopes for this one.

It's now the day after the release of America's Army 3. Did the preload, as did Superspck and we did a bit of playing around with it last night and today. Gotta give the warning to all: DO NOT TOUCH THIS GAME FOR AT LEAST A WEEK+.

Here's the good: it's got a lot of potential: The only game I've seen to incorperate bullet drop, breathing, sight/range adjustments, etc. Also (as all AA games have) it requires moderately difficult single player training to unlock multiplayer capabilities (Want a medic kit in multiplayer? Gotta go through the medic training in single player...). For a good tactical shooter this one has great potential.

Now for the bad: it is currently buggy as hell. Crashes on load 50% of the time. Had about a 10% success rate at joining any multiplayer server. Each piece of training completed sends an update to your player profile on the AA's main server, which is currently sooo overworked it may take 10 seconds, or may run into infinity (i.e. 10+ minutes) and never get done. It's got some serious issues right now that need to be patched before this game becomes even mildly playable. Oh, and confirmed that it wasnt just the two of us having this through AA forums.

So hell, it's a free game build on your taxpayer dime. Give it another couple weeks or a month and it should be up and running fairly smoothly. When it hits that time you can bet I'll give it another shot...

yea, i'm interested once they shake out the bugs. I got Expert in the basic rifle test and it didn't even record it. fuck that. I'll check back later.

so: AA3's new dev team issued a hotfix a few days ago, brought the game up to a first go-round beta version stage. Playable if anyone wants to try it out.

Superspck did some looking at Arma2...supposedly good reviews from players but very buggy release also.

So who's up for some L4D?

I was actually able to play a game without the server crashing. It was ok, but I had no fucking clue what I was doing. Just like BF2, I think it'd be better with a squad of Manhammers.

Alright, had to do that. Hold off on AA3 yet, still has a lot of bugs. It's playable if anyone wants a tactical shooter though. As Agent stated: it's no BF2. Dont expect simple controls or to immediately know what u'r doing. This is as close to 'real-life' as the army can make it while keeping rounds to 10 minutes or less...

Yeah. Pirates will find a way around this anyway, and create a product that's a lot more convenient to use than its legal, paid-for counterpart. As fucking usual.

Fucking stupid cocksuckers.

Sadly so very, very true. Can't tell you the number of XP installs I avoided my completely legit copies in favor of the hacked stuff I had simply because it avoided all of MS's bullshit. Make a good product and people will buy it. Fuck it up, and people will make it better then offer it for free.
