Yeah, flip a coin between the free versions of AVG or Avast. I think they're the biggest players with free versions.

comodo is also good but a tid bit agressive i think.

if you keep your windows and browser up to date, don't run strange executables or click strange links, and read email in plain text . . . you're pretty much completely safe. but it'd still be a good idea to use a trustworthy online virus scan every few months.

i have not had virus scan since we bought Mcaffee for Porkfrigats P2-350 back in 1998... Smart computing+hardware firewall > virus scan

If you're running "validated" I'm quite fond of Microsoft Security Essentials.
Admittedly it's like holding hands with Satan himself, but it works, is free, and has a surprisingly good catch rate.
I myself refuse to use safe surfing practices.
