Looks like Intel is trumping AMD atm. Should I got for an I7 or wait for these new fandangled core+gpu built in when they come out?
Looks like I will be going for Solid state boot drive +games. I still have the 2 74g 10k RPM raptors. plenty of HDD.

Need power supply, MOBO/w USB 3.0 CPU, Vid card. Going for pretty good stuff. I don't like ASUS at all. Suggestions?

if you have enough for an i7 go for that since i think am3 is already nearing the end of its product cycle and they are gonna be switching it up for fusion later this year/next year

having a cheap hex core might be nice though even today only a few apps are truly multithreaded so vv

Sure, if you want to run 3+ monitors in a game that has adjustable FOV. You'll probably want 2.

300 bucks of that is better spent on hookers and blow

I figure if you have the cash to buy an eyefinity rig, you have the cash for the quality hookers and blow too.

I'd probably wait for AMD's refresh before I bought a graphics card though (3-5 months?). Dunno if you want to wait that long, but both fermi and the 5-series are still stupidly overpriced. The launch price for the 5-series was lower than it is now :<. It's not like there are any demanding games out right now anyway.

For CPU, anything will do. Decide how much you want to spend first, then pick the CPU/platform based off of that. AMD provides better value low to mid-end, Intel at the high end. Unless you're encoding video, any CPU will do fine. The landscape hasn't changed really since the C2D launch so the advice there is more or less valid. Don't bother with any GPU+CPU nonsense. AMD's stuff won't be out til 2011, Intel's stuff won't be of much use outside the mobile space.

YMMV with 6 core CPUs. Anandtech got theirs up to 4ghz on air, but a $300 CPU treads into Intel's territory and you should get good enough OCs on i7/5 to beat that. Fun to have, but probably not much practical use to you.

One caveat is that RAM is much more expensive (DDR2 ~2-3x more expensive, DDR3 1.5-2x).

I require massive amounts of ram for fort raids in Aion. Tons of shader rendering.
