I noticed some backchatter floating around regarding COH steam installs and EF and some people having issues. In general I've not seen a helpful guide or help on this, so I did something to try and assist. To do this I blanked a machine and started from scratch, with no installs or history.
Correct Installion method
1. Install your steam copies (In my test I installed COH, OF, TOV)
You must run these on completion. This in each case tends to kick off the processes that are needed to complete the install (thus the steam install alone is not complete unless you start the game and run through the initial setup portions).
2. This will tend to check/install Direct X and C++ 2005 redist.
3. Do this for each game (COH, OF, TOV - as appropriate).
4. Once you have done this, and run the game, accept the steam CD keys as appropriate.
5. Do not pass go or take 200 until you do the above.
Once done, you can exit the game, and download the EF mod and install. This works as expected.
Notes on failures during the test.
I had failures in two places during testing.
1. I tried to install EF at the end of the steam install - but before actually running the game. This led to the EF mod not working. I also had to do a steam verify on the games which found some minor issues and fixed it.
2. If you install EF before properly running through the final Steam setup (dx, c++ 2005, start game, cd keys) EF installs itself into the wrong directory, and even repointing the launcher at the right directory won't correct this. If you do this, - uninstall EF. Complete the EF setup - then re-install the mod. It should during the install now properly find the actual install dir of the steam apps dir where COH actually is.
I hope this run through helps some people who might have run into EF issues on the steam version of the game
