wtf it works??

i tried it tonight, play the 30 minute trial of assassins creed2... and was heartily surprised. It works, semi-well... no download time, it just started the game. Surprising. Very very surprising.

ohhhh. I remember talk of something like this back in '08. i didn't think we'd see the internet speeds to give you good performance for a while . . . but i guess single player games like AS2 and shit only really need 30 fps. Seems they recommend 5Mbps, which is very do-able.

they charge you for it though. games are full price or more, and i'm sure they fucking disappear as soon as you close your account. is there a monthly fee? they're suspiciously mum about it. if there isn't one now, there will be. they'll want to closely tie revenue to usage.

still though, if you're looking at a $600 upgrade to play modern games, a little monthly fee and giving up your right to own your games looks pretty good. especially when we all buy on steam and have essentially already have our game ownership rights managed by valve.

i'd never use the service - i use my hardware for other stuff - but this may give the PC games industry a good boost.

Onlive dropped the subscription fee altogether a while ago. By all accounts, it still looks crapy compared to mediocre PC settings and any fast-paced game will be unplayable due to controller latency, but it may capture that part of the market that's too cheap for a console/PC upgrade.

yeah. definately not a real or longterm solution... but certainly easier then downloading the 6GB DVD of AS2 before finding out its AS1, only you can swim now..

and it has guns. or a gun. ahem. what did you expect? purportedly it's also a much better game - less repetitive, more fun.
