I don't live in the goddamn dark ages, so I don't vote for candidates who argue about the morality of contraception, the supposed sanctity of marriage as a proxy for denying rights to homosexuals, are actively trying to overturn the repeal of DADT, etc.

Seriously, in light of all these completely embarrassing social problems we have as a country, economic policies take a back seat.

You want a watershed event? Take a look at what the Virginia State GOP is about to sign into law - any woman who wants an abortion will be forced to have a procedure called a transvaginal ultrasound (basically cramming a medical instrument up her vagine). If she refuses, she can't have an abortion, period. A Democratic representative tried to introduce an amendment to the bill that simply added a provision where the women would have to give her consent to have this procedure - can you guess how that vote went? It failed, along party lines.

Marriage used to be a religious act.

The Government should have never stepped into marrying people.

Since they have then they can do Civil unions for gays and I am fine with that.

The contraception issue is a 1st amendment issue. Forcing Catholics and some others to pay for abortions or contraceptives is trampling on the freedom of religion.

If this debt does not get taken care of you will be living in the dark ages. All these nice little social programs will no longer be funded.

What harm does it do you to, personally, if some farmer wants to marry his farm animals? What he does in the privacy of his own barn/animal sodomy complex is his business, not mine. Who gives a fuck, honestly?

I think there's a slight difference here, in that animals can't necessarily reciprocate the same feelings / emotions that human beings can. The relationship between homosexuals is at least consensual and returned, whereas a relationship between human / animal would be more possessive.

Fixed that for you. Atheists and agnostics get married every single day, and nobody cares. But if two people with the same reproductive system want to do it, that shit is just downright immoral, destroys the sanctity of marriage. and makes the baby Jesus ball his fists in righteous fury.

Bottom line, for me, is I honestly don't give a shit who marries who. Homosexuals have every right to be just as miserable as most straight couples.

They do already. They want special rights. Slippery slope imo. It opens the door for polygamists and what not. Not sure if I really care any more.
In just about every state where gay marriage is legalized, the debate and legislation started via a referendum. See Washington, California (the reasons Prop 8 failed are due almost entirely to the LDS flinging $50 million into an advertising campaign), etc.

Prop 8 didn't fail it is now in the courts.

I agree with you here, actually. Though I'd say that the Obama administration trying to enforce this wasn't actually a policy move but a political one. They've changed the entire dynamic of the GOP caucuses, more or less forcing the candidates to adopt a hard-line conservative (read: draconian/13th century/puritanic, etc) stance on social issues (see Santorum's remarks last week about how pleasure fucking is immoral, and contraception is simply a means to perform sinful acts), which is isolating most moderate voters (like me).
Agreed. We should slash the fuck out of the defense budget and start paying some of this shit back.
