If I ever get to stay home for more than a week I will be looking to buy a house. I would like to figure out how to add a computer controlled lighting. I found the PLC boards and can find an old computer easily. Any ideas? At some point I want to put microphones in every room and make it voice activated like star trek ships, but will be hard to program the software i think.

Hire a midget to walk around the house ahead of you and turn lights on and off. He can even make startrek "Whoosh!" noises as he opens and closes doors.

you can already give your phone voice commands. android is open source. you wouldn't have to code the software from scratch. it's out there. someone probably already did it.
