Relic Entertainment is developing a Company of Heroes sequel set for release next year.

Details about the project are still scarce at the moment. Forum members on NeoGAF have extracted some information from the upcoming issue of PC Gamer. They include:

- 2013 release

- Main campaign is Eastern front, playing as Russians

- Lots of snow. Snow slows down troops and tanks, but can also form cover.

- Units can vault over cover such as low walls.

When contacted for additional information, a THQ representative told Game Informer they will be sharing more details soon.

Good to hear there's another on the way. In terms of graphics I still think the game looks great, but it will be cool to see the mechanics changed up. Hopefully a little more reliable AI for computer opponents and less vehicle stupidity when maneuvering around objects.

Basically new engine; real line-of-sight/fog-of-war (based on actual unit LoS), new units, Russian/German armies, and new multiplayer modes.

Today, THQ and Relic are proud to announce the long-awaited sequel to Company of Heroes, the highest rated strategy game of all-time. Putting players in charge of the Soviet Red Army, Company of Heroes 2 will introduce players to the harsh realities of war on the Eastern Front.

COMPANY OF HEROES® 2 INVADES THE EASTERN FRONT
Sequel to Critically Acclaimed Strategy Game Coming to PC in 2013

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. May 7, 2012 – THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced that a sequel to its critically acclaimed strategy game Company of Heroes® is scheduled to be taking gamers to the frozen frontlines of war in Russia in early 2013.

As a true sequel, this game moves the battle away from the common Western Front focus of World War II and refocuses on some of history’s most brutal and devastating conflicts on the Eastern Front, challenging players to take command of the iconic Red Army and repel the Nazi invaders from the very gates of Moscow.

Company of Heroes 2 utilizes Relic® Entertainment’s state of the art proprietary Essence 3.0 EngineTM to bring new technological advancements to the strategy genre in the form of innovative Dynamic Battle Tactics, increased graphical fidelity and new environmental destruction, ultimately putting the player in control with new Commander Abilities.

Greg Wilson, Producer at Relic Entertainment commented, “Company of Heroes 2 is a true successor, introducing a new front, new protagonists and new technology while retaining the unique mix of strategic gameplay and competitive multiplayer that made the original Company of Heroes such a success.”

Danny Bilson, Executive Vice President of Core Games commented, “We are excited to announce a sequel to one of THQ’s best loved properties. Company of Heroes 2 will deliver an amazing strategy experience along with a strong post-launch digital content plan that enhances and expands the product’s lifecycle.”

The original Company of Heroes was released in 2006 to critical acclaim and is currently the highest rated strategy title on Gamerankings.com (with more than five reviews) with an average of 93.82% based on 56 reviews. The game features similar acclaim on Metacritic.com with a Metascore of 93% based on 55 reviews.

Company of Heroes 2 is scheduled to be available for PC in early 2013. Keep checking back for more information.

Company of Heroes 2 chills out with ColdTech

As no recreation of World War 2's Eastern Front is complete without bitter, crippling cold, Relic has whipped up some fancy new technical whizzbangs it's calling 'ColdTech' for Company of Heroes 2. Snow gathers to slow troops, dynamic blizzards sweep in, and soldiers risk freezing to death.

Your army men will slowly freeze in the bitter Soviet winter unless they're hunkering down in buildings or around fires, so try not to send them marching through deep snowdrifts for too long. Heaven help the poor dears if they're out in the open when a blizzard hits.

ColdTech brings awfully fancy snow to CoH 2, which gathers and deepens to slow troops more and displays a record of everything that's passed by--until it melts or fresh snow falls on top.

It also adds fancy ice, which canny players can destroy to dunk anything moving across it. Hit the announcement for more on all ColdTech adds to Relic's Essence Engine 3.0.

Company of Heroes 2 is coming to PC in "early 2013." Check out our preview from May.

For those that haven't been following THQ went under. After reading this I now believe that there shall be no preorder of CoH2 from me. Been burned too many times by shitty companies releasing shitty games, and I have no faith in an EA produced CoH2.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/01/08/thqs- ... 0&ns_fee=0
Quote:
We’re heading towards the conclusion of THQ’s ongoing bankruptcy saga. After the publisher’s creditors raised objections over its hoped-for quick sale – objections which were upheld by a US judge – details are emerging about how that sale will eventually go down.

THQ had hoped to sell themselves as a whole, ensuring the company could exist as-is under a new owner. That’s now not going to happen, after it was decided that a wholesale attempt would fetch less money than dividing the company up and selling each franchise separately. A tweet by the Distressed Debt Investing blog confirms this move, saying “The auction will allow for piecemeal (“title by title”) sales of THQ assets”

DDI’s latest blog update on the THQ case explains how the sale will work. THQ’s properties will be auctioned off on January 22nd, with both titles and studios up for grabs. So far EA and Warner Brothers have been revealed as interested parties, although it’s not known which titles they’re eyeing up.

Also unclear is how this arrangement will affect THQ’s upcoming games. Company of Heroes 2, Metro: Last Light and South Park: The Stick of Truth all seem close enough to completion that a prospective buyer would almost certainly want them released and making money. The status of their other projects – like Volition’s Saints Row 4 – may be less secure. This is assuming the auction will keep each developer with their respective games, which itself is far from certain.

We should start to finally get some solid details come the sale hearing on January 23rd. In the meantime, wild speculation! Where would you like to see THQ’s many great franchises end up?

Booo, looks like they're out of keys. Teaks, spck and I were just talking about the preorder since it includes beta access, but decided to hold off. Let me know what you think of it.

I managed to snag a key. Played a few games, but I don't have much baseline to compare it against since I never played the first CoH. Seems fun enough. There's some kind of leveling system where you get to upgrade your generals, which seems like a hassle and not a great idea for an RTS. Matchmaking is pretty suck, but that's probably just a beta thing.

Don't like the idea of leveling, and word is they'll have some sort of in-game currency which I can only assume would also be used to upgrade units. I don't like the idea of unit experience carrying over in an RTS, either.
