I am also a fan of the 'Stalker' series. Shadows (1st one) was good; Clear Sky (2nd one) they improveed a few areas and fucked up a bunch making it the worst of the series, Call of Pripyat (3rd one) is the best of series.

PvZ is great stuff, even for wives.

Bioshock 2...all right, not really an 'avoid' game, but not at top of my list either.

Dead Island - Depends on who you play with. Play by yourself = crap; play with other friends = open ended romp through zombie apocolypse. A long way from perfectly executed, but finally someone getting close to how the greatness of zombie apocolypse games should end up. Hopefully the next one = polished greatness that is l4d2 and adds openness and sense of dread of DI into a wonderful game of Smoke screaming in fright.

As far as new games I see that X-Com pulled a metacritic of 89 and Dishonored pulled a 91. Been awhile since I've seen any non-mainstream pull scores that high...

I'd like to add a little segment called new vs old:

play fallout 2
don't play fallout 3

don't play borderlands
play borderlands 2

don't play x-com: ufo defense

Regardless of how tantalizing, don't accept any kind of horse game from dime whatsoever.

... That's really the only new advice I can give.

I really enjoyed fallout 3; new vegas was worth a full playthrough. I even got damn close to finishing fallout:tactics.

Sadly I joined the fallout train late in the game, so never really did fallout 1 or 2. Has 2 held up well enough that I could go back for it now?

i hated every moment of fallout 3 but ended up finishing it.

i enjoyed every moment of new vegas but never bothered to finish it.

that confused me so I can't recommend it.

Fallout 2 has probably stood up well. I replayed it in 2008 or 9 and it was still great. obviously things have come a long way since even then... but it's worth the 5-10 bucks you can get it for.

Both Fallout 2 and 3 are great, but for entirely different reasons. Play Fallout 3 if you enjoy Bethesda's games. Fallout New Vegas' world is crappier (and good god are the invisible walls annoying), but its RPG elements and characters are much better.

If you're going to play the old Fallout games, play them in order. It's hard to go back to Fallout 1 after playing 2. I played them after Fallout 3 and really had no issues. Get the GOG versions though, so you can mod them.
