A Passionate Response to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Ignoble Iranian President of the Islamic Republic of Iran,
While it is true that we Americans do not necessarily care to alienate the world in the arena of public approval, nevertheless, our fundamental system of government and existence as a nation remains wholly set apart from the opinion or perception of other nations. We do what we think is right, regardless of whether the fainthearted and jealous nations of the world approve or disapprove. When it comes to the collective decisions of the United States, moral integrity trumps opinion polls every time.
Spirituality, and the direction of an individual’s personal values and beliefs system is a personal choice, and what we Americans believe to be a non-negotiable human right. No nation state should ever find itself obliged to enforce spiritual belief thru diplomacy, use of force, or all-out warfare. To err in this manner is to display the arrogance of a despotic rule. You are mistaken if you think we have any interest in establishing spirituality throughout the world, and the bent of your letter points to a profound misunderstanding of why we exist and how we view the world. Spirituality is not the responsibility of nation states. Justice, on the other hand, is a different story.
Your letter reeks of hypocrisy and ignorance of the American way. Do not mistake what you see on CNN for truth, or even a shred of honest-to-goodness reality. Thanks for your concern about the disposition of our national wealth, and the inconsequential shift of political party rule during our mid-term elections, but we can manage that on our own. See the last 110 years for an example.
How long has Iran been a nation? More than 230 years? Then why is the United States exponentially more blessed with wealth, prosperity, and global influence than your struggling, stricken country? What makes you think we need the advice of a near-dictator with no grasp of non-Islamic idealism and capitalistic principle? Instead of throwing around words like Katrina, why not research Free Enterprise and learn something useful for your own people as a whole?
