my computer crashed yesterday after a power failure in the area. it wont boot and i think i need a new cpu but im not sure yet. my msi motherboad has this d-bracket thing to show where its having a problem and the 4 led lights should be all red when its a cpu problem. problem is that they really look like there are 2 red and 2 orange which is really confusing me since its only supposed to show red and green lights. when i turn on the computer nothing shows on the screen, it doesnt beep at all but the lights come on, the hard drive spins, and so do the fans. can anyone tell me if this really is the processor? im pretty sure thats what it is but i want to be absolutely sure before i spend the money to get a new one.

Can you tell me the model number of the msi board?

Also, have you popped the CPU out and looked at it? Obviously if there are burn marks or melted pins then you have a problem. If the CPU looks fine then there is still a chance that the problem is elsewhere.

If i remember right Socket478's always have one corner "clipped" so you can know what orientation to insert the thousands of golden penii into the pusy of the motherboard.

well yeah theres one corner that has 2 less pins but this one the board itself is split or something. it has a very rough edge which cant be right. i already ordered a new cpu and am just waiting now. ive had a few processors overheat and die on me before and this really seems to be the same thing.
