I knew the control method did not know the middle mouse. Still want it to happen for all external links.

no. for accessibility, web standards, and personal reasons.

however, if you customize a theme so it appends target="_blank" to every link and I will happily install it for you.

I use 2 plus my thumb, but on my MX518 I keep hitting the sensitivity buttons if I push the middle button. I do scroll with it though.
