I'm not sure I understand all the outrage, is there something I'm missing here? Does the guy who wants to build Whatever You Want to Call It preach extremism or celebrate 9/11 as a victory of some kind? If not, who fucking gives a shit? Regular Muslims didn't have anything to do with 9/11, extremist whackjobs did.
The main imam who wants to build it has published a few books (some in other coutries only?) that basically say stuff like, "America needs to become more Sharia compliant," and "Hamas is not a terrorist organization."
There is also a Greek Orthodox church across the street from the towers that as destroyed in 9/11. They tried to rebuild the church for two years but NYC told them no and they finally gave up. So if you cant build a GO church why can you build a mosque?
So people say the mosque people refuse to reveal where there funding comes from so obviously it must be Iran.
Also there are all those people who got killed by radical muslims in 9/11 and building a mosque there seems to bring up bad feeligns for their families.
There is also an existing mosque four blocks away, plus this mosque is in the financial district where there are relatively few apartments (its almost all office buildings). So the question is, "is this necessary or could it go in a location that would be closer to a residential area."
Also all muslims are terrorists.
They might be able to legally build there but if their goal is to perform outreach on behalf of Islam and show people that not all Muslims are crazy terrorists that want to destroy America then they should probably show some compassion and build it somewhere else.
Edit:
Lets build a Shinto shrine at the USS Arizona memorial.
Lets build a synagogue in Mecca.
Lets host QuakeCon at Columbine.
etc.
