Wait... so they should go ahead and be allowed to get measles, mumps, rubella, etc?
my dad had all three an he survived. So did his dad. And my great-granddad.

sure they suck, and the chances are pretty high that they will get them if you vacation in mexico city or uganda with your newborn... but is that chance worth injecting mercury (the bonding agent used in combo-vaccines) into your 8lb child?

Eh, i don't think so.

Believe me, i've been forced to do a shitton of research recently. In the early 90's, kids got less then a dozen vaccines. Now, they get over 40. Are we really that healthier?

You sure about that? As far as I know Dad only got measles and mumps.
And, people's immune systems were a lot stronger back then; they weren't using 99% alcohol hand sanitizers six times a day or taking an anti-biotic whenever they had the sniffles or a sore throat. Also everyone smoked more often than they breathed freely, especially when pregnant / nursing etc. People's immune systems were constantly compromised back then, which eventually made them stronger to combat with what they were constantly surrounded in. So like, yeah, there's a shittona shots available in a pediatrician's office today, but that's mostly cause the diseases / viruses in today's world are 100,000,000 times stronger than they were even 20 years ago. What's stupid is to give your infant child needless shots like the H1N1 shot, an anti-virus that's still in the testing and purifying stages.

tl;dr, but shots are a good thing. Especially for kids. I just wrote a paper on this in lollege, and it was intriguing.

i assumed dad had it during the epidemic in the 60's (and mom has talked about german measles before, pretty sure she had it?) but I could be wrong. But I'm unconvinced. Why are they a good thing? What is worth the risk of injecting my son with mercury? So that he does not get an uncomfortable rash? This tradeoff seems sketchy.

I've taken 1 (non-natural) anti-biotic since I was 12 or 13 (may not have taken many previously, my memory does not serve me). Does this make my immune system worse then someone who grew up on penicillin? And what if I don't treat my son with any (non-natural) anti-biotics? Does he somehow already have this weaker immune system, because of everyone else around us who *does* "over"-dose their kids? I'm confused with the logic... seems more like sweeping generalizations then actual fact. I don't agree that a higher frequency of air pollution contributes to stronger lungs, and overall immune systems. I blame today's clean air for a fairly steady increase in life expectancy, but I can't agree that more 2nd hand smoke and horrible air-quality standards could create stronger humans.

Herd immunity is an important part of how vaccines work. . . If 95% of people in a place are immune to a disease, the other 5% are safer. There will just not be as much of that disease around to get.

The people who are in the 5% are there for many reasons. . . Some of them are too sick to get the vaccine. It can be children who are too sick with other diseases to get vaccines. It can be a pregnant woman who cannot get the vaccine because it could hurt her baby. It can be a person with cancer who does not have a strong immune system. It can be an older person who has a weak immune system.

So if everyone in a place gets vaccinated, it protects these people too. . . So it is important that people who are healthy get their vaccinations. It protects the healthy people. But it also is important to protect other people who are old, weak, or sick.
So basically, if you opt out of getting vaccines for you or your child then it's quite safe, but if everyone does it it's really bad. So not getting vaccines is, to me, immoral on those grounds.

However 40 vaccines seems like overkill. Vaccines should be used for dangerous diseases, not tossed around lightly like anti-biotic hand soap.

George Carlin - Fear of Germs
It's sad how wimpy Americans have become, especially when it comes to any risk whatsoever -- take germs, for example (you can listen along here):

Where did this sudden fear of germs come from in this country? Have you noticed this? The media constantly running stories about all the latest infections? Salmonella, E-coli, hanta virus, bird flu, and Americans will panic easily so everybody's running around scrubbing this and spraying that and overcooking their food and repeatedly washing their hands, trying to avoid all contact with germs. It's ridiculous and it goes to ridiculous lengths.

In prisons, before they give you lethal injection, they swab your arm with ALCOHOL. Wouldn't want some guy to go to hell AND be sick.Fear of germs, why these fuckin' pussies. You can't even get a decent hamburger anymore they cook the shit out of everything now 'cause everyone's afraid of FOOD POISONING! Hey, wheres you sense of adventure? Take a fuckin' chance will you? Hey you know how many people die of food poisoning in this country? Nine thousand, thats all, its a minor risk.

Take a fuckin' chance bunch of goddamn pussies.Besides, what d'ya think you have an immune system for? It's for killing germs! But it needs practice, it needs germs to practice on. So if you kill all the germs around you, and live a completely sterile life, then when germs do come along, you're not gonna be prepared. And never mind ordinary germs, what are you gonna do when some super virus comes along that turns your vital organs into liquid shit?! I'll tell you what your gonna do ... you're gonna get sick. You're gonna die and your gonna deserve it because you're fucking weak and you got a fuckin' weak immune system!

Let me tell you a true story about immunization ok. When I was a little boy in New York city in the nineteen-forties, we swam in the Hudson river. And it was filled with raw sewage! OK? We swam in raw sewage, you know, to cool off. And at that time the big fear was polio. Thousands of kids died from polio every year. But you know something? In my neighborhood no one ever got polio. No one! EVER! You know why? Cause WE SWAM IN RAW SEWAGE! It strengthened our immune system, the polio never had a prayer. We were tempered in raw shit!

So personally I never take any precautions against germs. I don't shy away from people who sneeze and cough. I don't wipe off the telephone, I don't cover the toilet seat, and if I drop food on the floor I pick it up and eat it!Even if I'm at side walk cafe! IN CALCUTTA! THE POOR SECTION! ON NEW YEARS MORNING DURING A SOCCER RIOT! And you know something? In spite of all the so called "risky behavior ".... I never get infections. I don't get em. I don't get colds, I don't get flu, I don't get headaches, I don't get upset stomach, And you know why? Cause I got a good strong immune system! And it gets a lot of practice!

My immune system is equipped with the biological equivalent of fully automatic military assault rifles, with night vision and laser scopes. And we have recently acquired phosphorous grenades, cluster bombs and anti personnel fragmentation mines.

So, when my white blood cells are on patrol reconnoitering my blood stream seeking out strangers and other undesirables, and if they see any, ANY, suspicious looking germs of any kind, THEY DON'T. FUCK. AROUND. They whip out the weapons, they wax the motherfucker and deposit the unlucky fellow directly into my colon! Into my colon. There's no nonsense! There's no miranda warning, there's none of that three strikes and your out bullshit. First defense, BAM! Into the colon you go!

-- George Carlin

Well worth the five bucks.
looks like Eufloria which i picked up during the xmas sales. Except simpler.
the soldiers in Eufloria have 3 different attributes. Here it seems they are just one.

oh neat! i just read the faq:
Quote:
What inspired the game?
Aurora was inspired by games such as Eufloria and Galcon, though it aspires towards more freedom of movement and more symmetry in the levels than its predecessors.
p.s.

AURORA CARES ABOUT THE COLORBLIND. SPOILER! Highlight it to read it.
If you are colorblind, type Shift+E in a game and you'll switch display modes to a palette that should be more comfortable.

Neat. Audiosurf has one, too, but I never use it to see just cause I don't like to feel weak. ;)

why does blizzard treat their hacked customers better than Gaben?
http://www.penny-arcade.com/2011/1/19/

Is it because this hacked customer is from Penny Arcade? Or do all hackees get reimbursement instead of a paper helmet?
